Formation of Club

The Zonta club of Abidjan held its first meeting on October 20th, at Avenue Birhaheim in Abidjan. It received its charter from Zonta International on November 25th, 1970.

The charter was officially remitted on January 23rd 1971, by the then International President France de la Chaise-Muttin in Abidjan. The Zonta club of Abidjan had 25 members when it received its charter, and received the number 0658 1 01.

Members have come and gone throughout the years. Some have passed away and many have voluntarily left the club for other commitments.

Over its 45 years of existence, the club has been involved in projects covering the fields of education, health, child care and entertainment, food supply etc.

We are particularly proud of three of our projects that cover the fields of Health (The maternity of Petit Badien), Child care (a rural nursery) and recently the restoration of 20 water pumps for rural women.

We are also proud to acknowledge the fact that our club has received an award at the Zonta Convention in Nice this year for recruiting new members during the biennium.

Projects History

1. The rural nursery of Abidjan Bingerville, a small village about 30 miles away from Abidjan. It was the major project of the club in the 1980s.

2. The Maternity unit of Petit Badien a village by the lagoon 20 miles off the main road in Dabou, 50 miles from Abidjan. This maternity unit was built and fully equipped by the Zonta club of Abidjan. It started receiving its first patients in July 2013 and was officially handed over to the village on January 8th, 2014.

3. Four of the 20 water pumps that the club restored recently as the 2014-2016 project. The works have not been officially remitted yet.
